The Hidden Charms of Verdabbio

The journey through Europe wound its way into the heart of Switzerland, to the elegant capital of Bern. There, while staying in a room in a local home through Airbnb, a conversation with my kind Swiss hosts subtly shifted the course of the trip. Over a beer and shared travel stories, I told them about my plans to visit Pella Boleto in Italy—the village of a great-grandfather—and they smiled.

“We have a small cabin in Cama Verdabbio,” they said. “It’s along your route. You’re welcome to stop, rest, and use the facilities.”

My trusty van parked beside a rustic chapel on the edge of Verdabbio. A painted saint watches over the valley as snow-capped peaks rise in the distance.
