A Rare Beauty at Risk in Gozo


In a rare and breathtaking sight, a flamingo recently graced the serene waters of a bay on the island of Gozo, Malta. This unexpected visitor captivated the hearts of many, drawing locals and tourists alike to witness the majestic creature in its temporary sanctuary.

However, beneath the wonder of this moment lay a disturbing reality: the flamingo’s very presence on the Maltese archipelago put it in grave danger.

Malta and its sister island, Gozo, are infamous for their deeply entrenched hunting culture, which has made the islands a perilous place for migratory birds. Despite laws protecting many bird species, illegal hunting and poaching remain prevalent, fueled by a persistent, albeit minority, segment of the population that views hunting as a way of life.
